Among British tourists, few holiday destinations are more appealing than Lanzarote. This Atlantic island, administered by Spain, draws in millions of tourists every year – and a sizeable number of these arrivals are from the UK.
The island is particularly popular with families. But exactly what is it that makes the place so popular?
Beautiful beaches
The beaches of Lanzarote are a large part of what makes the island so appealing. There is a variety to choose from, including black-sand beaches like El Paso and Los Clicos. However, most tourists prefer the traditional golden-sand variety, which provides a place for sunbathers to soak up rays, and for swimming and other water-based activities.
Look for a luxury villa near the beach, and you can enjoy easy access to the sands – as well as a host of other features.
Family-friendly attractions
The island is also home to several major attractions, most of which cater to families. There are national parks to explore, as well as the El Golfo lagoon, which is coloured green by the algae that grow in it.
If you’re travelling during summer, then the warm weather might prompt you to pay a visit to a water park. The largest on the island is Aquapark Costa Teguise, which, during summer, is open from 10 am to 5 pm.
Outdoor adventures
If you want to get away from the crowds, then it might be best to retreat into the countryside. There’s no shortage of amazing hiking trails to explore, either on foot or with the help of a bicycle. You might also enjoy activities on the water, like jet-skiing, banana-boating, and surfing.
For something slightly different, tourists might head over to Los Jameos del Agua, which is a centre for art and tourism embedded into a volcanic tunnel. There’s even a natural auditorium, and a lagoon complete with several rare species, including the famous Blind Crab.
Local cuisine
If you’re going to be eating on the island, it’s only right that you should sample some of the local cuisine. Several restaurants stand out from the rest, including Lilium, which overlooks the marina in Arrecife, and Restaurant Costa Azul in the village of El Golfo, which is a perfect location for seafood.
If you’re going to be dining in a popular restaurant, then it makes sense to book as early as possible, especially if you’re travelling during peak tourist season. This way, you can be sure of a table right on the terrace.
While you’re on the island, you’ll want to try the local delicacy, Papas Arrugadas, at least once. These are small potatoes, traditionally boiled in seawater. Try them, and you’ll be adding lots of salt to your potatoes when you get back home!
