Yorkshire has a lot to offer, such as rolling hills, tea bags, and people there telling you they hail from Yorkshire for some reason as if it’s some huge achievement. Joking aside though the place is lovely to visit and the locals are super hospitable. They also boast one of the United Kingdom’s greatest accents so there is a lot to like when visiting this wonderful northern county.
One thing Yorkshire has got going for it, and something that may not be well known for those people that don’t venture outside of London is it is home to some of the nation’s best steakhouses. It comes as no surprise to me that our northern brothers do steak well, they do food well in general, I mean come on they invented the Yorkshire pudding. Let’s take a look at some of the best places to get your meat on (that’s not supposed to sound overtly sexual, apologies) up north.
The Rythre Arms Steakhouse – Main St, Ryther, Tadcaster LS24 9EE, United Kingdom
We are going to start with an absolute banger. This dining experience will make you realise the cow’s sacrifice was worth it. The beef here is superb. They also have some wonderful vegetarian options, so it hits the mark for diners from all walks of life.
For over 40 years, The Rythre Arms has been the premier steak destination in Yorkshire. Situated in a traditional, centuries-old pub restaurant nestled between Tadcaster and Selby, it serves the best locally sourced beef available. Head Chef Daniel Escada and his team cook all dishes fresh to order, ensuring that guests enjoy not only the best steak possible but also exceptionally fresh seafood, lamb, pork, and chicken. Proprietors Tony and Lisa Linley, along with Manager Lucas Avraam, invite guests to join them five nights a week for an unparalleled dining experience.
At The Rythre Arms, steaks are matured and butchered on the premises, offering a range of sizes from a modest 6-ounce fillet to the awe-inspiring 78-ounce Rythre Monster. Each meal includes fresh vegetables and hand-cut chips, complemented by a selection of impressive homemade sauces and sides to enhance any steak of choice. Guests are encouraged to save room for dessert, with options like homemade Jam Roly Poly, Lemon Cheesecake, and other decadent choices available. For those who prefer to indulge later, desserts can be conveniently boxed up for takeaway.
Cattlemen’s Grill – 17 Cheltenham Cres, Harrogate HG1 1DH, United Kingdom
Cattlemen’s Grill stands out as a premier location for steak, but it has something on the menu for you more daring folk which is why we have decided to give this spot a special mention. D|ont get me wrong the steak options here are incredible but they have one thing on offer here that certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted.
You see Cattlemens Grill is one of those spots that offer an eating challenge, and the one here is rather formidable. The Cattleman Grills 90oz steak challenge is a proper belly buster. This ginormous portion includes a 720z rump steak, 10oz of fries, 10oz of onion rings and in case you are on a diet a 4oz salad. To attempt this feat you will need to give the restaurant 48 hours notice and put down a £40 deposit. If you manage to complete and eat it all in 1 hour though you will get the meal for free and your name immortalised on their wall of fame. No excuses!
The Cut & Craft York – 8 St Sampson’s Sq, York YO1 8RN, United Kingdom
We are going to cheat a bit here as this is a chain and they have spots in Lancashire too (I can hear you Yorkshire booing me from here, I understand and I am sorry) but as chains go I feel The Cut & Craft are worth a mention. They do also have a spot in York so technically in my eyes, it still counts, and that’s the spot we will be focusing on today anyway.
Located in St. Sampson’s Square, a historic part of York’s city centre, The Cut and Craft offers a diverse menu, including the famous 10 oz flat iron steak, daily fish specials, and fresh oysters. There’s always something to love at The Cut and Craft. Bartenders craft world-class cocktails and serve fine wines and craft beers, providing the perfect accompaniment to any meal.
The Cut & Craft York is the original location as well so even though they have branched out now this is still the main place to be to experience this wonderful chain of restaurants. This particular spot retains the timeless elegance and beauty of the historic listed building. Situated in St. Sampson’s Square in York’s historic city centre, it offers a premium dining experience that combines luxury with accessibility.
The menu features the signature flat iron steak, locally sourced, farm-fresh ingredients, seasonal offerings, and exquisite cuts of meat prepared by an in-house master butcher. The thoughtfully curated drinks menu includes local and international craft beers, an extensive wine and champagne list, and signature cocktails. From the moment guests step into The Cut & Craft York, they will understand why it is the premier destination for special occasions and events.
The Whippet Inn – 15 North St, York YO1 6JD, United Kingdom
The Whippet Inn opened its doors in 2014, committed to bringing theatre, flair, character, and exceptional local food and drink to one of York’s lesser-trodden streets. The goal is to offer guests a safe haven from the stresses of daily life and a unique, end-to-end dining experience.
Renowned for its superb beef, The Whippet Inn provides guests with a fantastic variety of ever-changing cuts and breeds, but the restaurant is equally passionate about its other seasonally inspired plates. The à la carte menu features locally caught fish and unique vegetarian dishes, ensuring there is something for everyone.
The Whippet Inn prides itself on delivering first-class service, ensuring that everyone who visits leaves entirely satisfied. If not, guests are encouraged to let the staff know so that any issues can be promptly addressed. Quality is paramount at The Whippet Inn, where the menu is the heart of the experience. Ingredients are sourced as locally as possible to ensure freshness and to support independent producers and makers in the region, proudly flying the White Rose of Yorkshire. The building itself is Grade II listed and dates back to 1896 (almost as old as me!). However, it has been spruced up with moody colours, kama sutra wallpaper (a bit risque for some, but it’s cool), a menagerie of quirky trinkets, and creations from local artists, adding to its charm and character.
The Whippet Inn is owned by Martin Bridge and Andrew Whitney, two local businessmen with a passion for good food, good drink, and good living. They also own The Stone Trough Inn in Kirkham Abbey, which is well worth a visit for those in the area too.
Knives Down
So that is our selection of the best steakhouses we have frequented in New York, I am sure there are many more we may have missed so if you have any suggestions please let us know as we are always avid to do more research. Especially when our research means we get to visit restaurants and try all their delicious food. I suppose the last thing to say is to get yourself down to one of these spits, because if you don’t give it a go you will never know.
