Website of the Week – Design Letters

The discovery of a hand-drawn 76-year-old alphabet by the world-famous Danish architect Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) has led to the creation of a brand new homewares range by Danish company Design Letters, which is launching in the UK over the next few months. The company secured the rights to use the unique typography across their new porcelain collection, and homewares, which has now been followed by a brand new melamine range, designed for children but also equally suitable as stylish picnic or outdoor tableware.

Design Letters discovered the Jacobsen letters following intensive research in Copenhagen’s Royal Library, and after seeing extensive design drawings of the products and how the typography was to be used, the Jacobsen’s family gave full approval for their use.

Design Letters has even more graphic products with Jacobsen’s typography in the pipeline, including an office concept featuring the classic letters. So watch this space!
Everything we do with Jacobsen’s alphabet must have the family’s approval before we begin production. They treasure grandpa’s design heritage and we really respect and appreciate that,” says Mette Thomsen, founder of Design Letters. “We cannot make everything in the world with these letters and we certainly will not. Arne Jacobsen’s status as designer is indisputable. We treasure this as well.”
