Spring is in the air. Time for the rubber gloves
Spring is in the air and for many of us its time to dust off the cobwebs, get out the industrial strength cleaning products and maybe even some paint tins. Spring-cleaning is a right of passage at this time of year and Easter weekend is usually the biggest DIY weekend of the year so far (beware all A&E departments across the country!).
This week I’ve started on culling my magazine collection, which includes issues from as far back as 1995 (it is World of Interiors, which to me is totally acceptable). But that is the tip of the iceberg; the attic is next on the list. So when does collecting become hoarding? Not too long ago, the hoarder would have been considered an “eccentric.” Truth is, almost all of us have more than we need. The hoarder, however, collects so much stuff that his or her life is negatively impacted.
Tonight a new series of Get Your House in Order starts (8pm Channel 4). It features out-of-control consumers whose quality of life is being buried under mounds of stuff, some of it potentially valuable. On hand to help are two experts, antiques dealer Nick Allen and interior designer Abigail Ahern, who’ll make over the property after Nick has raised some funds. The first episode features a 25-year-old shopaholic Amie Ormand whose compulsive consuming is taking over her home and threatening her relationship with her fiancé Ali.
It might make for interesting television, so we can smugly reassure ourselves we are nothing like that. Might make me want to tackle the paper mountain in the office too before my husband says enough is enough. Do you have a collection that’s on the verge of hoarding?
