Simple Steps Towards a Great New Kitchen
Redecorating a kitchen can seem like a daunting task, but you don’t necessarily have to rip everything out and start again. In fact, with the finances of most households having felt the pinch of inflation in recent months, reusing as much as possible is the key to a successful frugal approach.
It is surprising how significantly you can change the look of a kitchen with some fresh tiling and a lick of paint. Have a look around for some design inspiration, but to give your kitchen that light and airy feel you need to make the most of the natural light available, so keep your colour hues soft with blues, greens or yellows. You can contrast the colour of the paint with tiling, or create a pattern within the tiling itself if you’re feeling adventurous. Tiles and paint are cheap and it’s easy to complete the work yourself.
When it comes to the units, think about whether they can be stripped back and perhaps repainted – if they are in good condition but simply look tired and dated, this may be a good opportunity to achieve a new look without breaking the bank. Worktops are slightly more prone to damage, and you can’t paint them – unless you want to run the risk of chopping emulsion into your salad! But with the savings you can make elsewhere, the cost of a new worktop should be affordable. If you are going for the period look you may want to opt for wood, but for a more modern look which can lend itself to different styles now and in the future, think about a granite worktop. As these examples from Wren Kitchens illustrate, there are a wide range of colour options available, and if money is still a concern, you can plump for a thinner slab.
The last thing to remember is to not get too carried away accessorising your new-look kitchen. It is easy to let costs get away from you when you’re adding bits and pieces all over the place, so look for just one or two statement pieces to complement your décor.
