Interview with ceramist Kaoru Parry of welovekaoru
welovekaoru was established by Central St Martins graduate Kaoru Parry and specialises in translucent contemporary English fine bone china.
What’s the most important thing to know about you?
All our products are exclusively Made In England. We pride ourselves in supporting and preserving valuable craftsmanship in ceramic manufacture.
Describe a really good day and a really bad day in the life of the Kaoru Parry.
A good day would be a research day like my recent trip to Venice. I love input!
A bad day would be not having enough time to play with my cat, Batman.
What inspires your ideas?
I’m always drawn to old things. There seems to have been a lot more craftsmanship involved back then. I love the fact that things were made by hand even in an industrial scale.
Describe the process you go though to turn your ideas into products.
Lots of research and development followed by sketches and maquettes. I have great relationships with the small family run potteries in Stoke where we develop new products together. It may take years to finally get a new product into the market.
What advice would you give to an aspiring ceramicist?
Understanding business is just as important as being creative.
Which three designed items could you not live without?
My Sori Yanagi kettle
My Burleigh Calico Teapot in black
My beautiful sprigged jasperware vase by Wedgwood.
What are you most proud of?
Supporting British manufacture and keeping highly skilled traditional craftsman and women busy making pots!
What’s next for you?
To discover more traditional manufacturing methods and collaborate with fantastic people.
And, finally, what’s your favourite colour?
Navy
