How to create a retro-style kitchen
The 1950s in America saw everything going from good to great. Elvis was rocking the jailhouse and Marilyn Monroe was dazzling with diamonds. Bold colours had made it into the homes, especially in the kitchen when reds and blues were plentiful. It was not a time to be reserved or to use taupe!

With the popularity of TV programmes like Mad Men and Pan Am there is a lot of interest in the 1950s and 1960s so we’ve put together a few ideas to bring a little of that PVC magic in to your own kitchen…
To get the retro look in to your kitchen, add some baby blues with a Traditional Blue Enamel Metal Jug from Amazon and a 50’s Style Refrigerator-freezer from Smeg. This Eames RAR chair from The Conran Shop is a classic and looks fresh even today and these Blue Striped Milkshake Paper Cups from DrinkStuff are totally back in fashion.
Continue the cafe style look with a Paul Cocksedge Styrene lamp and the Retro Diner Booth Double Seat from DrinkStuff and adding the Bar Craft Straw Dispenser from DrinkStuff will top this off.
This Bush A1447CR6 Washing Machines from Argos looks very stylish and not expensive at all, but black is so on-trend. The Presley Dining Table Blackstone from Drinkstuff will also help to balance out the blue’s and red’s.
Adorn your walls with Metro White Wall Tiles (20x10cm) from Topps Tiles of that New York Subway feel but soften with some White Slot Top Lace curtains from Argos – a really inexpensive way to create a light, fresh look.
Prominent features were painted kitchen cabinets, glass knobs, vintage linens and conspicuous electrical appliances that were meant to be used for long periods. In those days, the throwaway mentality was unheard of and people preferred to repair and re-use rather than replace so choosing something that made a statement mattered.
