Heart Home meets… Selina Lake
If flat-pack furniture and expensive designer pieces aren’t really your thing, and you’d rather make your own cushion cover than buy it, then Selina Lake‘s thrifty style aesthetic is for you!
The author of three inspirational interior design books, Romantic Style, Bazaar Style and Homespun Style (published March 2012), Selina’s signature style reflects the growing passion for crafting, stitching and painting and her books showcase homes that are packed with personality and interest, and full of homemade pieces, restored junk-shop finds and one-off treasures.
Her fresh, vibrant style is perfect for adding an instant uplift to your home, and I wanted to know exactly how she found her way into the sunny world of interior styling…
I have always been drawn to inspiring images and I had a passion for Interiors from an early age, I was forever re-styling my bedroom at home and drooling over pretty magazine features. Towards the end of my Surface Pattern HND course at collage I started contacting magazines and as well as established stylists asking (begging) for work experience. I was over the moon when I started getting offers of days work on actual photoshoots! I remember feeling so excited after assisting a stylist on a shoot for a Mother & Baby magazine, I knew I’d found my ‘thing’. I then spent the next year working as a Stylist Assistant on a freelance basis, this lead me to meet lots of stylists, photographers, magazine editors and art directors. After an amazing year I decided I was ready to try and get my own styling work commissioned, I got an opportunity to design a living room makeover for a friend of a friend and asked Photographer Susie Bell to shoot the room once the transformation was complete. I was thrilled when Real Homes magazine decided to run the feature and even more thrilled one of our shots made the front cover! After this Real Homes started commissioning me on a regular basis, I then launched my own website/portfolio and suddenly I was a fully fledged stylist. I now have over 8 years experience.

Absolutely everywhere!!! I love looking at inspiring blogs, Pinterest and Flickr, magazines, especially Mollie Makes & Danish BoligLiv, wherever I travel aboard I always stock up on foreign interior magazines. I also LOVE vintage fairs, antique & flea markets, more often than not your find me browsing Kempton Antique Market on Tuesday mornings – come rain or shine!! I also get loads of inspiration from the fantastic people I work with, and meet along the way. Last summer while Debi Treloar & I were shooting my latest book Homespun Style we met so many creative lovely people and I picked up some great homespun ideas. My husband’s a Graphic Designer, so he gets why I want to visit Craft Fairs, exhibitions and Galleries which is great so we often do creative stuff together on weekends which is always inspiring.
There have been so many memorable moments over the past 8 years, but I think my best was while shooting my first book Bazaar Style in Morocco, Debi Treloar and I spent a day running round the souks photographing all the bazaar things we also fitted in a spot of shopping and loads of bartering. It was boiling hot and we had loads of interest from the locals, they all wanted to be in the photos!!!
“A change is as good as a rest” my mum often says and she’s right, for an instant re-vamp why not swap things around in your home, re-arrange vases and ornaments and switch your bedroom cushions with the ones on your sofa. Even swapping lamps around or lampshades can make a big difference to your space. Also think about using objects in different ways in your home; I love using cakestands on my mantel piece with vases of flowers or tea lights displayed on them, and a vintage tablecloth could double as a stunning curtain.
I’m already so lucky as I fulfilled one of my dream jobs back in 2007 when my first book Bazaar Style was commissioned, since then I have produced two more books Romantic Style and soon to be released Homespun Style. My ideal styling commissions now are jobs where I’m booked for my signature style.
There are so many wonderful stylists; I love catching up with what everyone is working on! I especially love seeing my former assistants become stylists, it is so great to see Joanna Thornhill, Rebecca Newport and Charlotte Love’s styling work.
I work with amazing inspiring people, I get to travel, visit gorgeous homes and interiors and be creative! Plus I’m always bringing home bundles of left over flowers, cakes and quirky props from the shoots. And best of all everyday is different, there is never a dull moment!
