Heart Home meets… Louisa Grey
Louisa Grey is one of those stylists who has a wonderfully versatile aesthetic and enviable portfolio incorporating both fashion and interiors with stylish aplomb.
You just have to look at these beautiful visual colour stories she shot with photographer Emma Lee for paint company Fired Earth‘s SS12 catalogue to see she has a great eye for interpreting colour and layering up tones to create a truly inspiring palette.
I’m delighted to be able to share these fabulous new Fired Earth visuals on the Heart Home blog today and hopefully provide you with a splash of colour inspiration ahead of the bank holiday weekend!
Not knowing what direction I wanted to take I decided to study Textile Design at Chelsea School of Art where I qualified as a Weaver. After completing my course I started working in Visual Merchandising helping to design and instal the window displays for both Jigsaw and Agnes B. Still not being fully satisfied, I contacted a friend of the family – Gail Abbott – a very talented lady who let me assist her, she kindly opened up her contacts book and that’s where I began my career within interiors. This led to styling commercials and pop videos which added a varied element to my career path, from there on I couldn’t believe that I could be paid to do such a wonderful job… 10 years on and I’m still really enjoying it!
Hmm…It’s hard to pinpoint in a few words, I would say my style is varied, which I guess is why I am a Stylist! I have a playful approach, I like to embrace lots of styles – anything from modern to vintage, graphic to feminine etc.
I’ll start with the clichés – travel (I recently travelled to Nepal, such a colourful place!), books - I love collecting design books, the most recent purchase is a gorgeus book shot by Deborah Turbeville called ‘The Fashion Pictures‘. Markets – they are a huge source of inspiration and so are junk shops; over the years I’ve mastered the charm of bartering! Other things I get inspired by are the people I meet – I find everyone has something new to offer me no matter how odd!
I would have to say running around Tokyo in the Harajuku Flea Markets looking for interior and fashion inspiration for a client would be top of the list. Another one would be shooting my Christmas cards with photographer Claire Richardson, although it’s not a ‘moment’ as such we have so much fun (I assisted her when she was a Stylist many years ago and it’s always good to reminisce) plus I get to spend the weekend with the lovely Claire which I look forward to every year.
I’m currently giving my home a spring clean, it’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do! I’ve just completed the shoot for Fired Earth where they kindly gave me a couple of tins – perfect timing! My weekends are going to be up a ladder for the next few weeks – but I love nothing more than getting stuck in to a personal project.
I would love to design and style boutique hotels in some fabulous hot country – until then I’ll just have to book myself a holiday!
It’s hard to say as my style is so varied, there’s often elements of everyone’s work that I can say I find inspiring. I do enjoy the work of the very talented set designer Shona Heath as well as Rhea Thierstein (previously Shona’s assistant) – their creativity and imagination is so refreshing to see – very talented ladies!
Every day is different – each job asks something new of me… sourcing random props, hunting for locations to shoot all over the world and working with some of the lovliest people. Also, I’m always up-to-date with what’s in the shops, latest trends, and offers which is a bonus!
