Garden sculpture by Tom Stogdon

I saw Tom Stogdon’s sculpture at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year and thought it was really interesting.

The style and choice of art for the garden obviously depends on the garden owner’s taste and style so I’m always looking out for new and interesting forms of sculpture that I can put forward to my clients.

Tom’s pieces have a contemporary feel to them and I especially love the 3D stone and slate circular sculptures which have a wonderful sense of calm about them.

I also love the wall sculptures which would add interest to any garden, especially around a terrace or as a focal point from one of the house windows.  Garden art doesn’t have to be obvious or deliberate, it can be something a little more understated that you stumble upon when you’re least expecting it.

The alphabet series in particular I think is gorgeous – this could be used in many different ways both indoors and outside.

When I looked at Tom’s website following the show, I was really interested to read his story.  Having been born into a fourth generation of greengrocers, his first venture into sculpture began when he used to construct elaborate pieces using the fruit and this still inspires his work now.

His sculptures now are predominantly created using stone and metal but sometimes he works with plant material if the need for longevity isn’t a factor.

Tom is based in a group studio in Vauxhall, London, and often works outside on projects too.  Do take a look at his website if you’re interested to learn more or if you’d like to arrange an appointment to see his work in the flesh.
