Fashion Focus: Ones To Watch
With London Fashion Week just around the corner, our attention turns to the fashion collections that will look ahead to Spring/Summer 2013. However, it is not just the names of the big players on the British fashion scene that everyone will be talking about.
As well as Burberry Prorsum, Giles, Marios Schwab and the other fashion stalwarts on the main schedule, the presentations and shows outside of Somerset House are brimming with talent and help to maintain London’s notoriety as the home of innovative and ground-breaking fashion. These platforms also offer the lesser-known designers, who have often recently graduated, the opportunity to show their work to international buyers and press.
Last season, some of the designers that were dubbed the ‘ones to watch’ included Maarten van der Hoorst, Heohwan Simulation, James Long and Sophie Hulme.
Central St Martins alumnus, Maarten van der Hoorst, already has a Topshop collaboration to his name and has been selected as part of Selfridges’ Bright Young Things, and not without good reason. His collections to date have showcased his Dutch and Indonesian heritage as well as ‘transvestism and escapism’!
Heohwan Simulation is the brainchild of Korean designer, Hwan Heo, who graduated from RCA in 2007. Heohwan Simulation is a relatively young brand which is rapidly establishing itself as a force to be reckoned with in womenswear, from London to Korea.
James Long debuted his first womenswear collection at Fashion East AW11 and has continued to develop his instantly recognisable aesthetic, combining knitwear, leather and prints. The brand has gone on to be sold around the world and has already been featured in the likes of British Elle and Stella magazine.
Born and bred in London, Sophie Hulme graduated from Kingston University in 2007 and has gone from strength to strength, collaborating with household names such as Nike and being carried by prestigious stores such as Net-a-Porter and Liberty.
Laurie founded Bell & Smokey, an online fashion shop to provide women with sophisticated, feminine clothes that make them feel beautiful. You can keep up to date with her musings at bellandsmokey.tumblr.com and follow her on Twitter @bellandsmokey. Read more posts by Laurie Prescott.
