Creating the perfect modern bedroom
Modern bedrooms are all about sleek utility and understatement. This doesn’t mean they need to be cold or clinical, but everything should have its right place and there should be plenty of floor space to encourage an open, well-ordered feeling. Some studies have suggested that having a clean, spacious room actually encourages a deeper, healthier night’s sleep, so there’s more to it than scoring style points.

The centrepiece of the modern bedroom is of course, the bed. If you have room, the bed should be centralised with plenty of space on either side. One way of maximising your floor space is to make more effective use of your storage options. Buy a bed that comes with storage space beneath the mattress, so you can store clothes or personal belongings without the need for a full chest of drawers.

Similarly, any additional furniture should be practical and understated. A small writing desk and chair is a nice addition, particularly if you have very open bay windows. You should always make your furniture choices based on the room rather than the other way around. Make realistic choices that take into account how much space you have. Stuffing too much into a small room will create a cluttered, claustrophobic feel.

If your bed is dominating your floor space, consider downsizing. Bed sizes range from single to super king size, and it may be able to go smaller without significantly altering how much space you actually use to sleep. To maximise your comfort, make sure your mattress is new and well designed. A good place to look for quality beds in the UK is the Silentnight site.

A worn out or uncomfortable mattress can lead to interrupted sleep and exacerbate muscular problems or back and joint pain.

Great post! I like the use of neutral tones with just a pop of colour in these rooms. Keeps them calm and tranquil but with still a bit of personality and interest!
