Colour trend. Love it or hate it where does it come from?
Before Christmas Heart Home’s Ed Carole posted here about the 2012 Pantone Colour of the year – Tangerine Tango. Every year it seems that the anticipation of this announcement gets bigger and bigger.

Pantone’s Color of the Year declarations influence product development and buying decisions across a multitude of industry sectors such as fashion, home and industrial design. The color popped up all over the runways in the spring fashion collections including those of Tommy Hilfiger and Elie Tahari. Celebrities have already been spotted wearing it and orange in all its hues is rolling into the shops as we speak as accent pieces for our homes.

So how do these predictions get made? Pantone aren’t the only colour trend prediction company, there is a whole industry out there looking to shape our buying patterns. WGSN, Scotdic, Color Marketing Group plus the big paint companies like Akzo Nobel, ICI Paints, Benjamin Moore and Farrow & Ball as well as a host of boutique firms – all take a view on where colour is heading.

All of them quite literally trawl the globe looking for influences. Be that, big exhibitions, new artists, new technology, travel destinations, the socio-economic climate and even big sporting or other events that capture worldwide attention can have an impact. These companies interview people, hold focus groups and look in detail at the edgy undercurrents in each major city.

These findings are all then distilled into themes and manufacturers and designers are given previews up to two years in advance (above image of Melin Tregwynt loom). This is why it can feel in each season that a particular colour has leapt to the front of the collective imagination. The danger to be aware of here is that you can start buying a bit too much of the current ‘trend colour’.
But do our fickle hearts even remember the colours of the previous years….

Colour predictions can be fun and inspiring but ultimately you’ll feel happiest with colours that you feel comfortable with. So if Tangerine Tango is making your heart sing pair it with your favourite colours and turn your home and wardrobe in to a personal statement.

I think its cos it goes so well with grey. Perks it up a bit. My prediction is that it’ll be followed by turquoise/bright cyan. x

Really good informative article! I think with ‘trendy’ colours, they work so much better in smaller doses. Personally, an entire room of Tangerine Tango would probably give me a headache but seeing it used as accessories both in home decor and in fashion, it looks fantastic and so fresh. I’m personally using it in my dining room paired with deep charcoal grey and white but not necessarily because it was trendy (the announcement came long after I’d started decorating) but because I liked it. And as you said, that’s exactly how they should be used
