Clerkenwell Design Week: The New Aesthetic Movement
With Clerkenwell Design Week starting today there are many places/events that really tickle my fancy. One in particular is the New Aesthetic Movement exhibition taking place at The SCIN Gallery. This is Clerkenwell’s new four-storey materials showroom and sourcing library/service.
On show are fully-curated design and decoration at the cutting edge. New products are beautifully displayed in, next to and below decorative vintage-style white birdcages. Exhibits include the stunning Cubist resin architectural panel by Solomon & Wu; the Foulard sandblasted glass table by Chaplins; digitally-printed artists’ plates by The New English; sculptures in hair, cables and glass by Constanze Scheweda; and many more.
The New Aesthetic Movement uses CAD, laser cutting, 3D and digital printing and other computer-controlled processes to produce complex and intricate forms and patterns. It is also enriched by craft techniques and bespoke pieces. Thus producing pieces that are beautiful, eclectic, daring, and possibly irreverent.
One particular aspect that I cannot wait to see is the background to the show. Clearly visible from the street, it is a stunning 15 ft high digitally-printed “Angel” wallpaper mural – a detail of the drinking fountain in St Paul’s churchyard, from the Digetex Love London collection by Barbara Chandler.

Love London Angel Mural at the Scin Gallery.

One of the many gorgeous birdcages. This is the flamboyant over sized Rococo Pop door handle with keys in lacquered steel. Made from Omporro.

Pretty Birdcages hanging at the exhibition, showcasing intriguing work.

Pretty multicolored ceramic Mosaics with printed pop-patterns from Via Arkadia.

Chaplins Foulard side table in curved shaped sandblasted glass, to resemble a draped tablecloth; designed by Maurice Barilone for Reflex.

Curator: Architect and columnist Annabelle Filer and director of SCIN, with ‘Love London’ Angel Mural in background.
SCIN Gallery, 27 Old Street, London EC1V 9HL; Opens: Tuesday 22 May and runs for eight weeks.
All lovely photography provided by Barbara Chandler.

I love that birdcage! I’ve got one a bit like it in my front room, but would prefer that one for sure.
I would love to know what quote on the wall behind is? I guessed a few parts but still couldn’t make out the whole. Intriguing pieces!
