Choose Simple Modern Style for your Home
Simple modern styling is one of the most popular trends in interior design. Whether you live in an upmarket apartment complex, a new-build house or even an Edwardian property, it can really work for you.
As the straightforward contemporary look is all about creating light and uncluttered rooms, it can be used throughout your whole home. You don’t have to stick to the latest materials, as traditional ones can also be used effectively in modern designs, as long as you end up with a uniform style running through the property.

The decor in the stunning Stilwater villa in rural Stirlingshire, which is currently available through Savills Glasgow, is a great example of how to do it well. You won’t be able to recreate the beautiful views over the property’s private loch, but there are plenty of clever interior touches you could emulate in your own home.

Walnut flooring
One of the key design features at Stilwater is the polished walnut flooring used in the kitchen, bedrooms and living areas. It is a practical choice, as it is hardwearing and easy to clean, and wooden floors never go out of fashion.
It also goes with anything, so you will have complete freedom to select the furniture and wall coverings you want. Here, the flooring has been matched beautifully with black and white furniture, painted white walls and even a feature stone wall.

Black kitchen units
A stylish kitchen is a must in any modern home, and the interior designers have certainly achieved it at Stilwater. The black high-gloss finish units, integrated appliances and glass-topped island-style table combine to create a classy look, which you can copy in your own home.
One other thing to note is the huge aquarium in the wall that separates the kitchen from the sitting room. You may regard it as an extravagance too far for your house, but it is a great way to let light into the two rooms. Rather than a giant fish tank, you could use glass panels to create a similar effect.

Open fireplace
Traditional fireplaces look good, but can be difficult to incorporate in a contemporary interior design scheme. That problem has been cleverly solved at Stilwater, where the lounge has an open fireplace filled with logs instead of a large feature fireplace.
This look is easy to copy, but fireplaces regularly come back into fashion, so think carefully before you remove one from your home. Original period models are often worth quite a lot, so if you do take one out, don’t just throw it away.
