Behind the Scenes at Metro Retro

While we were shooting the Johnny Egg story for issue 3 (see page 86) we visited one place that is definitely on the list for a re-visit.

Metro Retro is a warehouse based online business supplying commercial and private customers with an eclectic mix of vintage furniture and decorative props.  It has grown from a Camden Market stall in the early 1990s, via two London shops to a warehouse situated on a farm in rural Essex.  The warehouse and workshop are also open by appointment.

In the last ten years they have also been developing a range of their own furniture incorporating reclaimed materials, all handmade in East Anglia.

It was a stylists dream and Johnny confessed he found it an inspiring place to browse and rummage.

Packed to the rafters with an eclectic mix of industrial chic, Post War furniture, school room and laboratory items, clocks, books, light fittings and even a working gramophone.  It’s no wonder that they supply pieces from stock for film, TV, theatre installation and exhibition work.
